CRAP! Our holding tank macerator FAILS in the Bahamas: S2 E15
We get to the Bahamas and our holding tank macerator fails. We can't dump our waste overboard and pump out facilities are quite rare in the country. We don't have a spare pump or any parts so this issue could dock us for as long as it might take to have something shipped from North America. Chris spends a LOT of time taking the unit apart in a very hot engine room, but finally diagnoses the issue. But can we find the replacement part? Thanks for watching!

Storms in Marsh Harbour, Abacos AND Rockets!! S2:E14
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Месяц назад
We leave Treasure Cay and head to Marsh Harbour to wait out some storms in the marina. They last for the better part of a week! Chris makes good use of the down time to fix the macerator, which failed after reaching the Bahamas. It's a crappy job for sure, and Sandra is happy to be passing tools this time. After the storms clear we explore the most eastern part of the island and survey the dama...
We relax at one of the 10 BEST Beaches in the WORLD S2: E13

Treasure Cay, Abacos has one of the best beaches in the world according to National Geographic and we spend a few days relaxing and hanging out. We cut through Grand Bahama Island on our way to the Abacos S2: E11

Our solar panels finally arrive and we cast lines from Ocean Reef Marina on Grand Bahama Island to Treasure Cay in the Abacos. Because we only draw 3.5 feet of water under our hull, we are able to cut through the island on its forgotten canal system, the Grand Lucayan Waterway. Hey hello, did you have yo request permission for flying your drone?

    • @gothatawaychrisandsandra
      @gothatawaychrisandsandra 2 часа назад

      No we didn't. Did we need to? I didn't think so. Our unit falls under the weight minimum to require it to be licenced. It was a state park here though, that didn't occur to us to ask about it there. National parks in Canada restrict their usage. So if we flew it and we weren't supposed to...oops. We learn as we go and tend not to fly it in busy areas. The drone itself has software that won't let it fly if we are near restricted areas like airports. We haven't flown it in quite a while.

    Don't remember, but think you got a new engine in subsequent video. Found out a few years ago, Evinrude and Johnsons don't like to idle in gear. Not sure all the issues you were having, but popping into neutral when slowing down may have alleviated some of that. Which is poor design if you need to idle into a place. I notice you use a tool, take the battery out and then put it back in. Don't know how long between uses, but doesn't seem like more than a couple minutes. Does that make the charge last longer? Just curious. Store some of mine w the battery still in. Mainly leaf blower, but some times drill

    • @gothatawaychrisandsandra
      @gothatawaychrisandsandra Месяц назад

      We don't always stay ahead of the charges. We might put a battery in that only has a few minutes left. You might be seeing that. Generally a batter will last 10 consecutive minutes running the wet/dry vac or even the heat gun, which we think it pretty good. Of course the drill in a few seconds at a time so that would last quite a long time.

    There is very little agriculture in the Bahamas. Don't feel bad about not supporting the local economy. In the smaller islands groceries come on the mail boat once a week, and may be 2 weeks old depending on the route of the boat. If you are staying a while in the Abacos, make friends with the store manager and reserve what he/she recommends. Marsh Harbor is the exception with a big store (Maxwell's) with frequent supplies. Special treat-- try local bread. Most"bakeries" are the kitchen window of a house with a sign.

    So I know you'll understand this. I live in a log home built in 1984. (Never build a log home in the heat/humidity/bugs in Georgia) Upper cabinet fell about 6 months ago. Built a frame to put it on to get it to correct height since I was by myself. Similar to what you're trying to do with that cabinet. Started to screw it into the backer board and into the logs and saw that they had the screws going into the valleys (rounded logs inside and out). It's a wonder it stayed up for 40 years. L off the main cabinets so they're in solid wood. New backer a little higher to catch meat of wood and longer screws. May need you guys to come down and help with other log cabin repairs for me. :)

I have not tried to quantify any capacity loss since new but I would guess pretty minimal. we have struggled with the solar panels a bit in terms of physical damage but we seem to have sorted that out as well. I think our current record is 11 days on solar which includes typically heating a tank of hot water a day and typical daily life.

      Oh isn't that a wonderful coincidence. The boat that hailed us was Canadian. It turned out he didn't respond because his radio volume was turned down. Not sure if you followed the eventual conversation but he just wanted to know if we were headed back to Florida. It threw me when he hailed because we were clearly in the middle of setting anchor so we thought there might have been a hazard of which we were unaware

    how many hours total to cross? how much fuel did you burn and speed?

    • @gothatawaychrisandsandra
      @gothatawaychrisandsandra 2 месяца назад

      It was about 9 hours. For 3/4 of it Chris set the speed at 7 knots. We went a bit faster due to the Gulf Stream and some tidal currents working in our favour. We usually burn slightly less than 4nm per gallon. It was 60 nautical miles from our anchorage near the west end of grand bahama Island to the marina in North Palm Beach. So 15 gallons? We paid $6 a gallon in the Bahamas but it's about $4 a gallon in the US. We hold 300 gallons total and topped up over there with 100 gallons. So somewhere North of $60 to cross if you assume a blended price between $4 and $6 a gallon.

    As someone from the south in the United States, there should have been a cup of sugar in that pot before you put the hot water in!!! Actually, I think my brother and I are two of the few southerners that prefer unsweet tea

      Canadians usually like their tea sweet, too! But we drink a lot and the sugar adds up so we cut it out years ago. We put a splash of lemon juice in too - not lemonade, which has sugar. The Bahamians love their Arnold Palmers. The best we coukd do is ask them to start with unsweetened tea and a 25% ratio of lemonade. If I asked for lemonade wedges instead, they gave me lime.

    Was wondering which headphones your using and do you like them

      We have the sena headsets. They are good but can be finicky. One failed in the first month and we had to replace it. The mic boom on one has to be reseated once in a while. I like them because there really is no danger of losing them if you bend over.

    Watching older videos and newer ones, but the more I watch the more I'm impressed w Chris. Knowledge, skills and sometimes dry humor!
